The problem isn't Natsume asking for another kiss...it's that Cater really wants that kiss. It was different, wanting it before, when his heart didn't feel squeezed like this. Wanting it now was dangerous. But, still, he can't bring himself to say no.
Taking a breath, Cater smiles as he turns back around to face Natsume again.
"Of course. I'm always good for one more kiss."
Still, he does keep his hands to himself this time as he leans in to press his lips to the other boy's.
He'll get to see the way Natsume's whole expression lights up when he turns and says that. Just as it was back at the party, there's no guile in Natsume's eyes as he returns Cater's smile.
"I was hoping you'd say that," Natsume murmured as their lips met. Unlike Cater, there was nothing holding him back from stretching his arms up to embrace the other boy, doing his own part to make sure he left his boyfriend with a kiss to hold him over until they saw each other the next day.
Natsume's fingers slid into Cater's hair at the nape of his neck as though they belonged there, and his mouth fell open unprompted to invite Cater to deepen the kiss.
The thought that he should pull back nags at him, but with Natsume drawing him in like that, his willpower, for the moment, crumbles. His hands come up and settle warmly on Natsume's arms as he gives into the kiss, deepening it with enthusiasm.
This was fine. As long as they didn't talk about anything too personal, it was fine.
"Careful," he murmurs against the other boy's lips as he reluctantly breaks away. "You'll get me excited all over again."
"I don't think I'd mind that at all, if I didn't think we'd get caught for sure."
Still, he's clearly reluctant to let Cater go. He does though. Even sighs as he lays there, before pulling himself up to tug on his own shirt. Being with Cater in the barn like this made him feel a little thrill of excitement that was entirely different from anything he'd felt before. It wasn't just the chance of getting caught— he honestly wasn't too keen on that.
It was more... the feeling of someone wanting to make out with him in a hayloft. He couldn't keep his grin to himself as they made their way down the ladder, or even as he caught Cater's sleeve one last time as the other boy reached to push open the door. That feeling carried over into the impulsive kiss he landed on Cater's lips before ducking outside with a laugh he couldn't keep in.
"See you tomorrow, Cater!"
He waved before jogging off to find his jacket, feeling as though he were practically walking on air the whole way home. Later that evening, Cater would get a copy of the picture Natsume had taken sent to his phone.
Cater waves Natsume off, but as he heads in the opposite direction he's feeling a far different emotion. Earlier, he was so giddy about all of this. Still wanted it all, was looking forward to getting up to more the next day. It was just that those words kept playing in his head, making his heart beat faster. It felt so nice to hear...and it filled him with anxiety, beyond that.
Natsume only thought he looked beautiful because he didn't know just how miserable it was to be around him, when he wasn't putting on an act. If he really saw him at his worst, he wouldn't want to be around him. No one would. And even if...even if he still felt he same way after seeing the real him...if Cater let him get that close...
Wasn't that worse?
As he struggles to fall asleep that night, looking over the pictures from the day he spent with Natsume, Cater vows to be more careful.
